Tony Knapp

Newstead-born defender Tony Knapp began his professional career with Leicester City before establishing himself at Southampton, where he helped the club win promotion to the top flight in 1966. He also played for Coventry City, Los Angeles Wolves and Bristol City.

Knapp joined Tranmere Rovers in 1969 and made 36 Football League appearances, scoring once, before becoming player-manager of Poole Town. He later enjoyed a long and influential coaching career in Iceland and Norway, including spells managing the Iceland national team and Viking.
